De Queen Elizabeth 2 maakte zijn eerste reis in 1969 en was een van de laatste grote trans-Atlantische passagiersschepen. Met een lengte van 293,5 meter en een topsnelheid van 32,5 knopen is het ook een van de grootste en snelste passagiersschepen die er zijn.<\/p>\n<p>Op 30 december 1964 werd het contract getekend met scheepsbouwer John Brown Shipyard in Clydebank in Schotland. Daar werd met de bouw begonnen op 5 juli 1965. Na de tewaterlating op 20 september 1967 werd het schip gedoopt door koningin Elizabeth II. Op 19 november 1968 begon de Queen Elizabeth 2 aan de proefvaarten onder leiding van kapitein &#8216;Bil&#8217; Warwick. Vanaf 26 november 1968 werden er proefvaarten gehouden in de Ierse Zee. Op 22 april 1969 werd een kleine maidentrip gemaakt naar Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.<\/p>\n<p>De fotograaf is Lex de Herder en de foto komt uit het Stadsarchief Rotterdam.
